Straw Free Sacramento seeks to gain the support of community members and local businesses, who care about plastic pollution, to reduce the amount of plastic straws that are used.
We invite businesses to take the pledge to only offer plastic straws upon request in order to reduce unnecessary plastic waste, and community members to do their part by requesting drinks without plastic straws.
Together, we can reduce the over 500 million plastic straws that are needlessly used and discarded every single day in the United States. Many of these plastic straws end up as litter in urban areas, in waterways, and in the ocean where they pose a threat to wildlife and the environment.
Below is a list of Sacramento businesses who have taken the pledge to only serve plastic straws upon request.
FAQ
"What if people need to use straws?"
We understand that there are medical reasons that would require someone to need a straw, and there are more sustainable alternatives available! Compostable plastic straws and paper straws are great options, and some reusable options include stainless steel, glass, and bamboo.
"Why are plastic straws bad?"
Plastic straws are among the top 10 items collected at beach and waterway cleanups. Many people don't consider plastic straws as a wasteful product, but they contribute to litter and can be harmful to animals when in the environment. They're also an easy thing to give up because most people don't really need them!
"Can't you recycle plastic straws?"
Unfortunately, no. Plastic straws are usually made from polypropylene, but due to their small size they are filtered out and sent to landfills.
"How can I help?"
Print out these cards and hand them out to businesses that you hope will take the pledge to only hand out straws upon request, and always remember to ask your server for no plastic straw in your drinks!
