Don’t Let Industry Bring Back Plastic Produce Bags. Ask Your Legislator to VOTE NO on AB 2226.

Call your legislator to ask them to oppose AB 2226 (Rubio), which would repeal California's plastic produce bag ban! AB 2226 would repeal California’s existing requirement that pre-checkout bags in grocery stores be reusable or made from paper or compostable materials.

In 2022, the California Legislature passed SB 1046 (Eggman), which limited stores to providing consumers with reusable, recyclable, or compostable produce bags. The bill was passed in response to many traditional plastic produce bags used for fresh fruits and vegetables ending up in compost waste streams and contaminating municipal compost facilities. AB 2226 directly repeals this important measure, moving the state backwards towards a marketplace once again flooded with traditional plastic pre-checkout bags that contaminate waste streams and harm aquatic ecosystems.

At a time when California must lead on tackling plastic pollution, AB 2226 moves us backwards.

"AB 2226 would repeal California's ban on plastic produce bags, a law the Legislature passed in 2022 with SB 1046. That law was a commonsense fix: it required the little bags we use for fruits and vegetables to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable, because the old plastic ones were contaminating our compost facilities and ending up in waterways. Repealing it now would flood stores with plastic produce bags again, and it would undo real progress. Especially with everything that's happened with SB 54, I'm worried about California backtracking on its plastics commitments. I'm asking Assemblymember Bryan to stand against industry and vote NO on AB 2226."
