Fourteen years ago, California passed the nation's most stringent landfill methane regulations, surpassing federal standards.
Yet today, California ranks second in the nation for landfill methane emissions.
Methane, a greenhouse gas 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide, is a major contributor to climate change, and current regulations fail to protect local communities and the environment. Emissions from poorly monitored landfills not only fuel climate change but also expose nearby communities—often in historically disadvantaged areas—to harmful air pollutants that endanger their health and safety.
As former EPA Secretary Gina McCarthy noted, “Reducing methane emissions is the single most impactful action we can take right now to slow global warming.”
The California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) 2010 Landfill Methane Rule was groundbreaking but has since become outdated. Advances in remote sensing, drone technology, and mitigation best practices now allow us to detect and address methane leaks with greater precision and efficiency.
“None of these practices require moonshot technology or break the bank,” McCarthy said.
“They put an emergency brake on global warming at a time when it’s urgently needed.”
We can lead the way again.
By urging CARB to update its regulations with these proven tools and stricter standards, California can reduce emissions, protect vulnerable communities, and reaffirm its role as a climate action leader.
